April Meeting

 

Ruby Porter MBE told us about her work at Sreepur Village, Bangladesh.

The village houses over 500 babies and children and 140 destitute women. They are provided with a loving environment, food, clothing, education and vocational training.

Ruby brought with her a wonderful selection of hand woven and embroidered items to raise money for the village. In the photograph she is holding a scarf hand woven in the village from natural fibres and dyed with natural dyes.

We can help in a small way by donating threads and needles. Please bring what you have to our meeting in May.

There are lovely pictures of Sreepur Village on their website   There is also the opportunity to help by donating money.

March Speaker and Workshop

Our speaker for March was Diana Barrett a member of York Embroiderers' Guild and the bursary winner for 2011. She is pictured outside the Folk Hall with her beautiful jacket created as part of her degree work at Hull.
Her talk traced the cjhanging attitudes to women and embroidery through time, and featured embroidery as far apart as Bess of Hardwick and an embroidered telephone screen from the 1930's. It was all very interesting.

March ditties

Dianna Barret's talk- "For what it's worth" was very thought provoking and informative. It was a different perspective from one of our bursary students.

The Saturday stitch group is Beavering away.  Member are unsurfacing many hidden talents through their skilful mentor.

I cannot wait to see the all the works on the Blow your own trumpet table. 

The small quilt challenge by Jean Greaves has begun - even more to Blow our trumpets about.

  

The workshop with Serene Partridge is open - Saturday May 18th

"Miniature gloves" (follow up to Serena's small shoes -requested by members )

Don't be put off by the size. Serena will be at hand to offer various patterns to meet all needs.

Cathy’s talk for our February Meeting was entertaining and packed full of fascinating information on cyanotype printing, Shackleton’s ill-fated Antarctic Expedition of 1914-16, and Frank Hurley’s amazing photographs of the ships and the men.
